ACL Surgical Procedure
Surgical reconstruction involves the following steps;
- Inspection of the knee and repair of any other damage (e.g. Torn cartilage)
- Harvest of tissue to make the new ligament
- Tunnels are drilled in exactly the same place as the old anterior cruciate ligament used to be.
- The graft is placed into the tunnel and held by a fixation device.
- The patient is then mobilise and begins physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
Where suitable donor material is not available or has been used before other parts of the body can be used as well as artificial ligaments.
Although the rehabilitation is quite strenuous, the results of treatment are very good with complete relief of symptoms in the vast majority of patient.
For most patients this procedure can be performed as a day case or overnight stay. Minimally invasive surgery combined with modern pain killing techniques (See anaesthesia) make this a straight forward procedure with a low incidence of problems and early return to work and activities
